Our story The trainer started with a dream of making leather by hand into beautiful, smart and practical things. Founded in New York in 1941 by six craftsmen, the house grew under the guidance of Lillian and Miles to become the original American leather house. Then came Bonnie Cashin: she was hired by Miles Kahn in 1962 to be the first head designer for the trainer. With Bonnie's bold vision of color, proportion, and strangeness—her love of work —Coach has evolved into a perfect reflection of modern freedom and equality, the New York attitude of the 1960s. In the decades that followed, Coach opened its first store on Madison Avenue and evolved from a family-run leather company to a fashion house known worldwide for its distinctive collections and New York-inspired lifestyle. Today, as in 1941, we are shaped by our unique story - and committed, in everything we do, to celebrating craftsmanship and our hometown and optimism in the authentic American style.
